Mia’s “miracle”

A little blind girl called Mia sees a pig in the distance…

It’s a miracle say some of the comments

The screenshot below is the pig that Mia “sees”

Farmyard scene showing two large pigs with black spots—one in the foreground standing close to the camera, and another in the background resting near a fence. There is a wooden structure to the right, an animal shelter. The ground is dry and patchy, with trees and bushes along the fence line. Overlay text reads: "🥺she saw the pig! And described he was a tree!" and "I'm in my can you see him all the way over there?" Instagram interface elements are visible, including the username visuallyimpaired_n... and "Visit to the farm, almost ...". The video has 1,895 likes, 98 comments, 5 shares, and 19 saves. She asks “how can I see him?”

Her mum doesn’t know.

As a blind person I can explain… she doesn’t…

Mia is interpreting a pattern in her residual sight.

The majority of blind people have some residual sight that allows us to interpret our surroundings.

Photo collage of two similar scenes in a room.

On the left, a blurry screenshot that shows a person’s foot in sandals resting on a sofa, a wooden table, and in the background a whiteboard with colourful hexagon shapes arranged in a grid pattern. There is a large blue icon with a white “i” at the upper left and a red circle in the centre. The user interface at the bottom shows this is from an app that simulates sight conditions.

On the right, a sharply focused photo of the same scene. The foreground has a foot in a pink sandal on the same ribbed sofa. Towards the right is a sturdy wooden table. There is a large whiteboard displaying hexagonal English Paper Pieced quilt blocks arranged by in a honeycomb pattern, with some smaller hexagons underneath (parts for new blocks. Some handwritten numbers are visible on the lower whiteboard. The lighting is natural, and the room looks cosy and tidy.

As human beings we are “programmed” from birth to interpret patterns. Right now you are if you’re visually reading this blogpost interpreting the patterns that are the letters, words, and pictures.

You’re probably wondering if I see the blurry image at arm’s length and beyond how can function.

I am living in a logic problem.

For instance the photo below fully described in the text that follows.

Two side-by-side images of a grassy area with bushes and trees in the background. The left image is blurry, with a red circle highlighting a specific area, and the word “Crocodile!” written across it. The right image is clear, showing a path with grass and a large log among the bushes, which resembles the shape of a crocodile.
My Charles Bonnet Syndrome (hallucinations many blind people experience) turned the blur I saw into an in focus crocodile about to attack from the long grass.

Of course I knew logically that I wasn’t about to be attacked by a crocodile but our brains are wired to spot potential predators and other dangers.

Similarly Mia knew there were more pigs in the pen and her brain interpreted the contrasting shape against the tree as another pig and was correct.

If you have working eyes go and look around… notice the patterns and how your brain interprets them.

Until next time.
